Road to Glory: Honor (October Kids Theme – 2013)

All of God’s creation is important to Him. Jesus told us that God remembers each sparrow, even though there are thousands (Luke 12:6-7). But Jesus said that people are even more valuable to God. In fact, God counts every hair on our heads! God shows us how important we are to Him when He pursues a relationship with us. And He started in the very beginning when He sought out Adam and Eve in the garden. God shows us how much He values us because He loves us.

Honor is letting someone know you see how valuable they really are. Like God’s honor is fueled by His love for us, we show honor back to God because we love Him. And we follow God’s example when we show honor to others. Showing honor demonstrates that we see others as God sees them. Every person we meet has value to God and deserves our honor.

The monthly memory verse is: “Love each other deeply. Honor others more than yourselves (Romans 12:10, NIrV).” When we spend the time to get to know people, we are showing them that their ideas, feelings, and abilities are valuable. We give them honor by recognizing the contributions they can make in our lives.

In Week One’s Bible story, David didn’t seem like someone who would be the next king, and he sure didn’t look like he could defeat a giant (1 Samuel 16:1-13; 17:1-58). But God could see David’s heart and knew he was worthy of honor. Our Bottom Line is:Honor others by giving them a chance. Everyone deserves a chance to be more than we expect.

In Week Two’s Bible story, Jonathan is a prince and rightful heir to the throne (1 Samuel 18:1-9; 19:1-7; 20:1-42). ButJonathan chooses to honor God and David by stepping aside and helping his friend take the throne. Our Bottom Line is: Honor others by putting them first. When we take the time to think about what the other person wants or needs, and put them above our own desires, it shows how important they are.

In Week Three’s Bible story, David had promised to treat Jonathan’s family with kindness when he became king. Many years later, David kept that promise by taking care of Jonathan’s son, Mephibosheth (2 Samuel 9:13 and 4:4). Our Bottom Line is: Honor others by keeping your promises. It shows we value them enough to be truthful and work to do what we said we would do.

In Week Four’s Bible story, David led the Israelites in celebrating an historic moment in the kingdom (2 Samuel 6:12b-22a). He was celebrating something God had done, so he wanted to bring more honor to God than to himself. Our Bottom Line is:Honor God by giving Him the credit. God has given us everything. So, when we are successful at something in life, we can celebrate that and thank God for what He’s done for us.

Grow Tip: YouVersion Discussion Questions

Putting our faith in Jesus begins a journey of faith. While God is the source the spiritual growth we experience, we have a responsibility to act in ways that help us grow. Without a plan to grow, most of us will never move forward in our faith.

Even when we want to grow, it can be difficult to know where to begin. To help you grow, here’s this week’s “GROW Tip“:

Tip: Follow the Live Event for Sunday’s Message on YouVersion

Each week the Scriptures are available on the screen, but also on your web enabled, Apple or Android device. To access our events, follow these simple steps:

Tap the dashboard icon in the top left hand corner of the screen, then tap Live. (Depending on your screen size, you may have to scroll down to see this option.)

  1. If you are prompted for the app to use your Location, tap Allow if you are looking for local live events
  2. If no prompt, or if no events display: Type in a group name (Deep Water), event name, zip code or city
  3. Locate the event you want and tap on it to participate
  4. Follow the outline for the Event

(Shortcut: Just click on the Bible icon at the top of this page. Each week, it links to the current event.)

The event is not “live” in the sense of everyone participating together at one time. People can join and work through the material when they want and at their own speed… and are not interacting “live” with others…. But you are all seeing and reading the same content… so all are literally “on the same page.”

Each week we produce discussion questions. These questions are written to help you get into the passage from the week before and apply the truths discussed that week. While we don’t use these during the worship gathering, they can be used to review things through the week–or invite a couple of friends to discuss them with you!

Teen Group

Deep Water Church launched our first Youth Small Group, Deep Teens this past Tuesday!! If you’re in 6th-12th grade and you excited to grow in your faith, join them on Tuesday evenings at 7:00pm at the home of the Slaters.

Each week we will talk about how to understand our faith and live it out, how to overcome the trials of life and how we can model Christ-likeness in everything we do. The materials coincide with an app called Bible Studies For Life. This app will allow you to see what we are talking about each week and spend time discovering it before you come to small group. Don’t have a smartphone? No problem! You can access the material in other ways!

To get involved or get the address, contact Angie Barker. For more information, contact us or comment below!

Hope to see you there!

Group Changes

Most groups change over time. Many have weeks they don’t meet because of everyone’s schedule. Some take breaks over holidays (like between Christmas and New Year’s Eve). It’s always awkward when you show up for a group and no one is there! As we get more groups going, remember to connect with the group leader or another attendee before you come. You’ll find the leaders are fun people who would love to get to know you–and then you’ll know someone when you show up!

Changes to Wednesday Women’s Group

A new group for women started this Wednesday at 7:00pm at the worship space of Deep Water. The group will meet EVERY week to study the Bad Girls of the Bible instead of every other week. This coming week, they will begin chapter 1.

For more information, message us, comment below, contact Julie Memmolo or see her on Sunday!
